4000-plus words banned for use on license plates in Maryland

The Baltimore Sun reports,

The agency’s Objectionable Plate List, as it’s called, is a compendium of vulgarities, obscenities and other no-no’s aimed at keeping tags out of the gutter.

The MVA occasionally gets input from an unlikely source: the prison inmates who make the plates at Maryland Correctional Enterprises. “Sometimes they’ll be quality control,” Dacey says. “They’ll call us and say, ‘Hey, this combination is a drug reference or a sex reference.'”

Regulating speech is a fool’s errand.  In most cases, the First Amendment saves the government from itself.  This isn’t one of those cases.

The list of banned words is pretty arbitrary.  You can see for yourself by taking the banned word quiz at this link.
