Happy Dia de los Muertos!

At the beginning of October, while working on a fall recipe, I stumbled upon an article about Día de los Muertos and realized instantly that this was the perfect way to honor [my] grandmother. She was the matriarch of our family and now that she has passed on I want to honor her on Día de los Muertos.

The frightful visions we have of death shouldn’t be so morbid, they can in fact be, pleasant and joyful.

This weekend I attended the most lovely Day of the Dead celebration.  It was filled with good people, food and drink.  We decorated sugar skulls and drank too much absinthe.

Sugar skulls

I made a fascinator for my skull. Maybe there is a market on etsy for my sugar skull hats.

This skull drank too much "Death in the Afternoon." Aww, poor skull.

I stayed up way too late last night baking Pan de Muertos.

  1. Well at least the skull has excellent taste in cocktails. Death in the Afternoon is probably Hemingway’s best non-rum drink. Also I am sure the pan des muertos is worth it, because that stuff is delicious.

  2. Every year, I tell myself I’m going to make sugar skulls and pan de muerte, but I never get around to it. It looks like so much fun!
