Studio sued over “The Crow” reboot — It’s the curse of “The Crow”

Filming of the The Crow reboot was set to begin this fall.  Just recently, Siouxsie tweeted that Bradley Cooper, a.k.a. the nice guy from the television series Alias, was in talks to star in the film. Perhaps the decision to cast Bradley Cooper in the Brandon Lee role was the first sign that the film was doomed.

But now this.  Earlier this week, the Weinstein Company sued Relativity Media in Los Angeles Superior Court over distribution rights to the 1994 film, The Crow.  According to TheWrap,

The Weinstein Co.’s lawyer, Bert Fields, told TheWrap that the Weinsteins have a contract to distribute “The Crow,” and got the impression that Relativity chief Ryan Kavanaugh planned to sell those rights to another distributor — so the company is suing to keep that from happening.

This lawsuit makes it look unlikely that the reboot will ever get made.

The Crow, for those who don’t know, is the film adaptation of the comic book of the same name by James O’Barr.  The film centers on the character Eric Draven, a rock musician, who is brutally murdered along with his fiancée.  A year after their death, the Crow brings back Draven’s soul to seek vengeance.

The film, sadly, was tainted by the accidental shooting death of Brandon Lee during the filming of the movie.  And for years people have said the film the Crow is cursed.  Maybe the lawsuit is just another indication that this film should not be remade.   Just leave the story alone.  Brandon Lee is Eric Draven.  End of story. Furthermore, if “The Crow” isn’t remade, then a whole generation of goths may be spared from attempting to dress up like the title character.  In the words of Jillian Venters, “Friends don’t let friends dress up like the Crow.”  Crisis averted.

  1. I think Bradley cooper could have pulled it off. I am bummed the movie isn’t going to be remade.

  2. I’m with you here: Brandon Lee is Eric Draven. That’s it.
Why the hell remake that movie? It’s great the way it is!
