Death in the Afternoon

Most people know Hemingway’s book on bullfighting, “Death in the Afternoon.”  But few realize that Hemingway also created a cocktail with the same name.  The recipe first appeared in the cocktail guide titled So Red The Nose” — a book containing a collection of drink recipes submitted by leading authors from the early 20th century.

Here is the complete recipe for Death in the Afternoon:

Pour 1 jigger of absinthe into a champagne glass. Add iced champagne until it attains the proper opalescent milkiness. Drink three to five of these slowly.*

Translation:  Use 1 1/2 ounces absinthe and 4 ounces Brut champagne.  Siouxsie recommends Kübler Absinthe Superieure.

*WARNING — Do NOT drink five of these in one sitting.
