Diane Birch To Release Goth Album

Siouxsie will admit it.  She didn’t know who Diane Birch was until she read this article.  Siouxsie just listened to her, and Ms. Birch sounds a lot like (S)Norah Jones.

But apparently Ms. Birch will be releasing a new album entitled “The Velveteen Age” on which she covers songs by The Cure, Joy Division, Siouxsie & the Banshees and others.  Intriguing .  It is set to be released December 7.  If it sounds as good as the album cover, Siouxsie will be a fan.  Ms. Birch explains:

“During my teenage years when I was into Goth and wearing outrageous, vintage Victorian clothing, these songs were amongst my nearest and dearest,” says Birch, who appears in one of her vintage Victorian wedding dresses at age 16 in the photo on the EP cover. “Sitting in my bedroom with my headphones pressed into my ears till they hurt, each song gave me a weird kind of hope for my future. I would have never imagined I would get a chance to record them one day, let alone with some of my closest friends.”

It all becomes clear:

The daughter of a conservative pastor, Birch was only allowed to listen to church hymns growing up. She rebelled as a young teen by embracing Goth culture and listening to bands like Sisters of Mercy, Peter Murphy, and Echo & The Bunnymen.

Supposedly this album cover is an actual photograph of Ms. Birch when she was 16-years-old.
