Hells Angels Sue Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen’s “Hells Four-Finger ” Ring
The Hells Angels’ Death-Head Insignia

Last week, the Hells Angels filed a lawsuit accusing the Alexander McQueen fashion house of  misappropriating the gang’s trademarked death-head insignia.  According to one report, a gang member’s old lady was shopping at Saksfifthavenue.com when she spotted the skull-with-wings design.  [source]  One week later, Fritz Clapp, the long-time attorney for the Hells Angels, filed suit rather than send a cease-and-desist letter.

The items at the center of the dispute  include a kick-ass ringclutchdress, and a Pashmina scarf.  Prior to the lawsuit, Alexander McQueen referred to these items as a Hells Four-Finger Ring, Hells Knuckle Duster, Hells Angels Jacquard Silk Dress and Hells Angels Silk Scarf.   But since the lawsuit, those names have been changed.   (The original names for the items can still be seen on sites like Polyvore.)

In the press, Mr. Clapp claims the bikers are suing, in part, to protect the safety of anyone wearing the Alexander McQueen designs.  Mr. Clapp worries that  “anyone wearing them would be considered an imposter by club members.”  [source]   And apparently, things could get dangerous.

Not to quibble with the Hells Angels and their esteemed counsel, but that explanation doesn’t make any sense.  It is impossible to understand how a woman wearing one of these designs could be mistaken as an imposter.   Women aren’t even allowed to to be members of the gang.  And, no self-respecting Hells Angel would wear a thousand-dollar McQueen-designed Pashmina scarf.

The complaint is available at this link.

McQueen’s response to the suit is due in two weeks.

Stay tuned  . . .

The Media lawyer in me says – Egregious lawsuit for money & publicity.

The yogi in me says that it might be a good idea for all concerned to do a few headstands before going any further.

  2. It doesn’t look good for McQueen. Fritz Clapp’s mowhawk is too cool.

  3. I’ve been drooling over that pashmina.

    • Better get it quick. Looks like it might be a collector’s item. Just be careful who sees you wearing it. Unless of course you are secretly a man and a Hells Angel. Then never mind.
