Zola Jesus — the Next Siouxsie Sioux (or not)

Above: Zola Jesus relaxing by a lake.

For years music journalists have labeled up-and-coming singer-songwriter types as next Bob Dylan.  So it is probably about time that the next Siouxsie Sioux be anointed.  The Guardian (UK) has tagged Zola Jesus with this honor.

Being labeled the “next” anything can also be an unwanted burden.  But such is the fate of Ms. Jesus.

Ms. Jesus is described as a caterwauler and a fan of Lydia Lunch.  Lately, Ms. Jesus has taken to teasing her black hair and going heavy on the eye makeup.  What is not to like?

For all these reasons, the Siouxsie Sioux-label is not entirely unfair.

There is much more to Ms. Jesus, though, than just a great a sense of style.  She is a classically trained opera singer.  She is just  20- years-old.Her real name is Nika Roza Danilova and she hails from Madison, Wisconsin.

Look beyond (or because of) any labels and give Zola Jesus’ music a chance.  The music is what matters and it is pretty great.  On March 9, Ms. Jesus released her latest EP called Stridulum.  It is on heavy rotation here.

  1. WOW!! I’ve never heard of her before, but she is just awesome!! Indeed she is Siouxsie-ish, but the music behind the voice reminds me of the Jesus & Mary Chain or even the Pixies in its fuzziness and melody. Thanks for posting this; I’m definitely gonna be listening to more of her!

  2. Yay! She reminds me of a poppier version of Fever Ray. She is supposed to have a new video out soon. If I see it, I’ll post it.

  3. Yeah – this is really great, and reminds me of J&M Chain too. And how could anyone who is a fan of Lydia Lunch be bad? I’m totally getting this.
