Taping Three Minutes of Twilight Lands 22-Year-Old Alleged Goth Pirate in the Slammer

If you are going to be a Goth pirate, this is a better way to go.

Siouxsie is not a huge fan of Twilight.  But, sending someone to jail for taping a few minutes of it is outrageous.

As reported by the Chicago Sun Times, Samantha Tumpach, a 22-year-old girl, decided to throw a surprise party for her sister at a Twilight showing at the Muvico Theater in Rosemont, Illinois (Chicago).  Apparently, Ms. Tumpach wanted to memorialize her sister’s birthday with a short video.  She enjoyed Twilight so much that she decided to tape a few short segments of the new movie too, mostly with her talking about how much she liked it.

When the employees spotted Ms. Tumpach using her camera, they immediately called the cops.   The managers insisted on pressing charges, and she ended up in jail for two nights.  She is charged with a felony that prohibits piracy and bootlegging.  She faces up to three years in prison.

Ms. Tumpach’s tape totaled about three minutes.  But, Ms. Tumpach claims that most of what she taped did not even include the film.   A portion of it included footage of Ms. Tumpach and her family singing Happy Birthday to her sister at the movie theater.  (This easily accounts for 27 seconds of the tape; Siouxsie just timed herself singing this.)  Another part of her three-minute tape includes the pre-film commercials.  So, that leaves at little over two minutes of New Dawn on the tape.

Siouxsie finds this whole thing weird.  Is the new Twilight movie really that great?  And why the need to film part of a birthday celebration at a movie theater during a movie?  Does everyone do this?

While Ms. Tumpach’s actions are questionable, they hardly seem criminal.

Siouxsie hopes this case gets dropped quickly.  If the footage is mostly of a birthday party, and if the footage can’t be sold as a bootleg, it would seem that the necessary element of intent is missing.

What is really going on here?  Maybe Rosemont, Illinois just really hates Twilight fans.

This situation is a confusing mess.  However, Siouxsie knows one thing-  throwing a surprise birthday party at a Twilight showing and being charged with felony piracy while doing so means this girl has earned her Goth stripes.  Welcome to the club baby bat.
