Scientific American has this great post called “Bones Out of Joint” about two artists, Holly Gilmour and Sean Craven, both of whom create art that depicts bones and skeletons.

The Girl Scouts removed the mom as troop leader because Ms. Hintz sent a Girl Scout email to parents that included a link to her husband’s goth website (presumably as part of her signature line).
I get it. The Girl Scouts aren’t goth and they don’t want to be associated with any subculture’s website. Including a link to the website on her girl scout email was careless at best, stupid at worst.
But the Girl Scout’s reaction makes no sense. It is disproportionate to the mistake. It is inconsistent with their “law,” and looks narrow-minded and petty.
Let’s see how the Girl Scout’s action comports with the Girl Scout Law:
I will do my best to be honest and fair — Not so much. Fair would be informing Ms. Hintz of their concerns and asking her to remove the link from her Girl Scout emails. Honest would be telling the truth about why the Girl Scouts removed Ms. Hintz. They didn’t remove her because they didn’t like her signature line. They removed her because they don’t like that she is involved with a subculture.
friendly and helpful — Well, not so much.
considerate and caring — Apparently, only if the people are just like you.
courageous and strong – I don’t think the Girl Scouts’ actions here could be viewed in way courageous. But they certainly are a strong organization, one that I’m afraid to cross. But more like a bully.
responsible for what I say and do – The Girl Scouts haven’t copped to all the free publicity they have given Wisconsinsickness.com, the goth website at issue, this month. Nor do they seem to want to accept any blame for how out of hand this dispute has become. It takes two to tango.
respect myself and others — As long as they are just like me.
respect authority — As long as the authority is the Girl Scouts
use resources wisely – Even if it means wasting time and money to fight silly battles.
make the world a better place — For people just like them.
be a sister to every Girl Scout — Well, almost every Girl Scout
Here is the thing — few moms want to be troop leader. It is a ton of work and time. You have to deal with a lot of annoying moms who think there is a better way to do everything even though they aren’t willing to commit to the position.
I’m not crazy about Ms. Hintz’s use of YouTube to discuss her situation (she must have posted at least a dozen videos) and I have no clue as to whether she was a good troop leader.
But she seems articulate, well-meaning, and passionate about the Scouts and her role as troop leader. This entire situation is sad and such a waste of time.
I can’t help but feel bad for the kids that have to watch all these adults act like such idiots.

This weekend I went to Economy Candy in NYC. I bought a pack of this gum. I then went to a yuppie hippie coffee shop in Soho. The patrons laughed at my lace-up boots. A young yuppie hippie snickered, “like, those boots are sexy.” I said, “they aren’t. . . . They are ‘undeniably sexy.’” The end.
Cologne, by the way, is home to one of Europe’s most beautiful cathedrals. It is a strange irony that the same religious zeal that went into creating such an amazing monument is also the same force that led to the persecution and murder of so many innocent people.
The retrial is really nothing more than theater, but it seems like a valid and positive exercise. I just hope she beats the rap this time around.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Robert Kirkman, the co-creator of The Walking Dead comic book series and AMC’s hit television show, has been sued by a collaborator and former friend, Michael Anthony Moore, who claims he is entited to half the proceeds from the franchise.
Moore is Kirkman’s high school friend and the original artist on the series. Moore claims he was duped into assigning his rights away from the franchise and that he has not been paid royalty payments owed to him. In other words, Moore claims that Kirkman has become a corporate zombie.
I haven’t seen a copy of the complaint. But will update this as soon as I do.
Rings (from top to bottom) — green plastic ring with plastic with tinfoil on inside; onyx ring; skull ring with wedding band, and peridot ring; random ring; snake ring; worry ring; and last, but not least, my poison ring.
Peridot is a great gemstone for goths. According to Goth Magick, it is a “creativity crystal . . . for people who feel hampered by the rules of society. . . . [P]eridot is a great boost to personal freedom. Depressives can also find solace here. . . . Peridot is fantastic for dark wiccans as it can keep them from becoming ‘too dark.’” Squee!
Posted in Goth with tags Black, paint on January 29, 2012 by siouxsielaw
I am getting ready to paint my dining room black this week. Sounds simple enough. I went to the paint store and found a paint chip of what I thought was black. It was called Notre Dame. It looked pretty black to me. See for yourself here. So I purchased a gallon.
But when I started to paint my wall, it didn’t look black enough. It looked gray black, almost –no offense people at Benjamin Moore — like a dirty chalkboard.
So I did what any self-respecting goth would do. I went back to the store and asked the kind folks to put more black in my “black” paint. They tried — they put as much pure black as would fit in the can.
I went home and tried again. But it still wasn’t black enough. Meanwhile the people closest to me were becoming concerned with my obsession on the many shades of black.
I hate being wasteful, but I decided to start from scratch. I figured that if I am going to paint my dining room black, it has to be the best black I can find. So I went back to the store and looked at every available black paint chip. And I found it. The most perfect black paint ever – Black.
That’s right. I don’t need Oynx or Wet Baby Seal Back or Midnight Thunder. Just plain, old-fashioned Black.
I have seen this manicure a bunch of times so I decided to give it a go. For the matte, I used Knock Out Cosmetics’ Flatte Black. And I used Chanel’s Black Satin for the rest. I feel a little guilty about using Chanel, but in my defense, it was a gift (from me to me, cause I deserve it).
In any event, it doesn’t matter anymore. As of a few hours ago, according to Pitchfork reports, Disney has removed all shirts from its shelves because Disney “became aware there could be an issue” and they needed “to review the situation further.”
Are you concerned that the goth and/or punk look are going mainstream? Do you worry that nothing is edgy anymore? Do you wonder where the line is between us and them? Apparently, it is dog collars.
Personally, the spiked-collar look is a little too NCIS lady for me.
Though some spiked collars can be quite lovely. Recently, I saw a young art student sporting a three-tiered spiked collar. It worked for her. And this link has a spiked collar and outfit I like very much.
