Siouxsie Welcomes Rihanna to the Darkside
Siouxsie’s goth detector seems to be functioning perfectly. Rihanna’s new album cover for Rated R, which was photographed by the great Ellen von Unwerth, features Rihanna donning black leather, dark lipstick, and a dramatic eye with black eyeliner.
Interestingly, people seem somewhat hesitant to label Rihanna and/or her appearance as goth. For example, in this MTV clip not a single person uses the “g” word. Perez Hilton and Just Jared restrained themselves from even commenting on her look.
Siouxsie does not care much for labels but they do serve a purpose at times. Siouxsie cannot help but wonder why people seem reluctant to use this label with Rihanna and thinks that it may have something to do with Rihanna’s race, sunny country of origin, or music genre. No matter. Rihanna continues to embrace her dark inclinations.
Perhaps we should have all seen this coming. Umbrella was the title of her first hit. And of course, a parasol is a tell-tale sign of gothiness.
Siouxsie says the goth tent should be large enough to include Rihanna and hereby declares Rihanna goth.
Somewhat off-topic, Siouxsie couldn’t help but link to these images of Rihanna on the set for her new music video sporting tall boots. Enjoy!

For the record, a new Rihanna video came out.
She’s a lesbian vampire in a medieval castle.
Laetitia Casta co-stars.
